What’s the difference between pulse dose and continuous flow oxygen portable oxygen concentrators?
Pulse Dose
Pulse dose concentrators deliver oxygen on demand, meaning a dose of oxygen is delivered when the portable oxygen concentrator senses you inhale a breath. Pulse doses are measured in milliliters and called a “bolus.”
Pulse dose portable oxygen concentrators are typically used while the user active and awake. The machine allows the person to be active because they are lightweight and portable due and run on (rechargeable) battery.
Pulse dose portable oxygen concentrators are not recommended for sleep but can be used for sleep in some cases. (Please speak to your doctor about whether you can use a pulse dose unit for sleep.)
Continuous flow
Continuous flow oxygen concentrators provide a constant flow of oxygen. The flow is measured in liters per minute or LPM.
Continuous flow portable and home stationary oxygen concentrators are recommended for sleep.
