What Is a Medical Grade Oxygen Concentrator?

Medical grade oxygen is oxygen at a purity range no lower than 87% up to 100%. Medical oxygen concentrators concentrate the 20.8% oxygen we normally breathe up to 87%-95.6% purity. In recent years, the importance of medical grade oxygen concentrators has gained prominence, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These devices have played a vital role in providing a consistent and reliable source of oxygen to individuals with respiratory conditions.

How Oxygen Concentrators Work

Medical grade oxygen concentrators are specialized machines designed to absorb nitrogen and concentrate oxygen from the surrounding air. Oxygen concentrators do what is called pressure swing absorption or PSA. Atmospheric oxygen is at 20.8%, while nitrogen makes up 78% of atmospheric gas and the rest inert gasses. Medical oxygen concentrators will absorb (or hold on to) the nitrogen in their molecular sieve columns then release it through an exhaust port. There are two columns and the direction valve in the concentrator will purge each column to concentrator the purity to medical grade oxygen up to 95.6% purity and not lower than 87%. This is noise that sounds like clicking and air exhausting. Unlike some marketed oxygen concentrators, which may be used in non-medical settings. Atmospheric oxygen is at 20.8%. Non-medical oxygen concentrator produce low oxygen concentrations that do not provide a medical benefit and can be called an oxygen concentrator if it produces more than 20.8% purity. Medical oxygen concentrators devices adhere to strict regulatory standards, ensuring that the oxygen purity meets medical requirements, typically at or above 90%. This provides a continuous supply of oxygen without needing to worry about running out, unlike tanks or cylinders.

Portability and Versatility

One of the significant advantages of medical grade oxygen concentrators is their portability and versatility. Many models are compact and lightweight, allowing user’s to move freely while receiving oxygen therapy. This means individuals can maintain an active lifestyle without being tethered to a stationary oxygen source.

Noise Levels and Efficiency

Our medical grade oxygen concentrators are designed with the user’s comfort in mind. They operate quietly, ensuring that users can sleep rest without disruptive noise. Additionally our brands reduce heat output, especially the OxyHome stationary oxygen concentrator. This efficiency not only benefits patients but also reduces energy consumption and operating costs.

Regulatory Compliance and Safety

Perhaps the most crucial aspect of medical grade oxygen concentrators is their adherence to stringent regulatory standards. These devices must meet specific safety and performance criteria outlined by regulatory authorities, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. Compliance with these standards ensures that patients receive oxygen therapy that is safe and effective, reducing the risk of complications.

Medical grade oxygen concentrators are indispensable tools in the healthcare industry. They provide patients with respiratory conditions the oxygen they need to lead fulfilling lives, all while maintaining safety, efficiency, and compliance with medical standards. As technology continues to advance, these devices are likely to become even more compact, user-friendly, and accessible, further improving the quality of life for those who depend on them.
